Meesterlijk Design & Ambacht :: 2016

ShowUp 2014

I had the best weekend! On Saturday I was one of the models for one of Holly’s gorgeous bridalshoots *blush* with the amazing photographer Anouschka Rokebrand (more on that soon) and today I went to the ShowUp trade fair with Nina from Paper Stories. We saw a lot of beautiful stuff and on top of that it was just really nice to be inspired together with a friend. I will pick some brands to blog about in the coming weeks, but here are just some inspirational photo’s I made. I made them with my iPhone.. my little boy dropped (yes, I did say dropped) my Nikon camera this morning and now it’s kind off not zooming anymore.. In fact it’s not doing much anymore.. Any tips for a good camera are more than welcome! As far as highlights go: THE VENUE! The trade fair has grown so much! {1. Ferm Living via Kolk & Kolk Agenturen // 2. ShowUp August edition 2013

Last Sunday I went to ShowUp for the second time and I saw a lot of beautiful new brands (and old) in Amsterdam-Noord. I was pleasantly surprised the fair had grown so much, it’s such a great initiative and I think its success proves that. I made photo’s of a couple of my favorites, like the incredibly talented and quirky De Krantenkapper, the environmentally conscious NikoNiko and designs by the lovely Bibi de Lang alias BL-ij and her initiative Little Black Book a collaboration with Yvette Jacobs. (we are kindred pastel sisters I’m sure). I loved the ceramic cups by Alissa + Nienke (you can buy one at Restored!), the taxidermy (you know I have a thing with that) by Luxury for Nature just to name a few. Keep your eyes out too for the new collection by Kidsonroof and check out the new papergoods at WowGoods. See you in February for sure! {1. Kidsonroof / 2. BL-ij / 3. Alissa + Nienke / 4 & 5. In memoriam: Gisèle d’Ailly van Waterschoot van der Gracht

This week the colorful Gisèle d’Ailly van Waterschoot van der Gracht died at the respectable age of 100. She led a fascinating, creative life and she reminded me a little of my grandmother. Like my grandmother she was an artist and like my grandmother she was an eccentric person who never fell ill and was youthful and playful up to the end. On one of my favorite sites Freunde von Freunden she was interviewed in november of 2012 when she just turned 100, it’s really a nice interview with beautiful photo’s by Jordi Huisman. Cees van Ede made a documentary about her some years ago that you can find here. I don’t think she had any children or any next of kin and since I heard the news of her death I keep wondering what will happen with her legacy, her beautiful house and work. I somehow miss her although I never knew her. {All photo’s by Jordi Huisman except the first found on Pinterest }

Shops to visit: Friday Next {Amsterdam}

A while back I visited Friday Next in Amsterdam together with Nina from Paper Stories. What a lovely shop! You can drink coffee there and have something to eat as well. We ate lunch there and would have stayed the whole day if possible! The store is packed with design furniture, accessories and lifestyle things. Everything is carefully selected. I wanted to buy the whole lot! (they also have a webshop)

Shops to visit: Restored

Whenever I’m in Amsterdam I try to squeeze in as much quality shops in the (often) limited time I have. Every time I try to cover one particular area, such as the Pijp or Noord or center. I usually know exactly what stores I want to see and in most cases there even is a time plan involved. You could say I’m a little bit neurotic that way. The funny thing is I usually don’t prepare at all whenever I go and visit a foreign city. Foreign cities and their unknown treasures, the enormous quantity of must-see shops: they have a way of paralyzing me. “There is no way to see everything so I might as well just go and see what pops up.” is usually my city trip or vacation attitude. Since I had plenty of time to get to know Amsterdam (I was born and raised in Amstelveen which is kind of its suburb) I have conquered the paralysis as far as this city is concerned. I know it inside out (like my back pocket as we Dutch folk say). Last Saturday I went to Restored on the Haarlemmerdijk, a shop I wanted to see for ages (I […]

Let the light shine through

Now that Christmas is over and done with I find myself secretly longing for spring. Although I understand it’s going to get colder this coming weekend (they even said ‘below zero’!) I tried to ignore that piece of information. I especially needed some sunlight because yesterday evening I saw the first five episodes of Game of Thrones season 2. ‘Winter is coming and the dark night is full of danger and terror‘, which was pretty much the gist of it. I enjoyed it, but found myself especially excited waking up to a sunny day in a somewhat more normal world. Terror and darkness can be somewhat tiresome. So here is to letting the light in and to the unexpected treasures you can then discover.   {I inherited this cup and do not know it’s origin. Since I was little I have always been fascinated by the japanese girl inside. If someone knows where it comes from I would be glad to hear!}

Some things I love #4

Christmas is upon us and I keep thinking about shiny golden accessories. We already had snow this year but it was a bit early, would be nice if we had a white Christmas though. I would like a bright blue sky with a bright sun and a snowy white world. It always reminds me of skiing (which I love). Just some things I love, next post will be more Christmassy I promise! {1. Some things I love #2

I had a wonderful weekend. On Sunday I met some Twitter friends in real life at a Twitter meet-up (thanks for hosting Rivka!). And last Friday I was at the Dyson blogger event. I met some other bloggers, got a lot of information on the latest Dyson product and ate delicious little cakes. So for now just some things I love. Happy week everyone! {1.
