Kindred Spirits Interview #7 Mae Engelgeer

I’m a huge fan of the work by Mae Engelgeer so I jumped at the opportunity of visiting her studio and interviewing her. If you don’t know her work, you must be living under a design rock, cause she’s been featured nationally and internationally in almost every design magazine and blog from Elle decoration, to Bloesem and she’s taking the world by storm. On top of that she really is the sweetest person. Please make sure to check out MagasinMae for your very own Mae Engelgeer piece or check for the nearest retailer. The Kindred Spirits interviews are now done in a slightly different format. I hope you like it!  Can you tell something about your background and how you ended up in textiles? I have a background in fashion. I graduated at AMFI, the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, where I specialised in Textile Design. After a while of working in fashion I was accepted at the Sandberg Institute, direction Free Design, the master course of the Rietveld Academie. Here I had the opportunity to learn more about textiles in relation to autonomous art and design and especially the area that exists in between.  Where do you find your inspiration? What has been the inspiration […]

Meet the Tweet revisited

When I went to Meet the Tweet last Sunday (thanks again Nina, Rivka and Ria) it was actually one of our conversation topics: why post something about something when others have posted about that something. Is there anything you can add? I thought about that conversation while I postponed writing about MTT. You see, I was a little bit shy. Because how could I add something when so many attending had written so many good posts already? But then I remembered our conclusion: you always have something to bring to the table when it’s in your tone of voice or when it’s drenched in your particular ‘style’. And I remembered what I thought was the great positive about that Sunday: it was meeting so many talented and passionate Dutch ladies. I really was blown away by how amazing some of their products were. I have this awe for anyone with the creative gene, maybe because I lack it. So here are some examples of the talent of some of my (new) favorite creative ladies. In the little booklet Nina made all the attendees have written some quotes and blogtips. If you would like to get your hands on a copy, […]

Last weekend: ShowUp

Before I got incredibly sick (it’s okay, I’m finally feeling somewhat better, although my throat is still sore and I’m out of tissues) I went to ShowUp last weekend. Here are some of the pics I made. I loved the event and will definitely try to go again next August. Everything was really well arranged too, even up to a free coffee! { 2. Kolk & Kolk agenturen / 3 + 4 ENGEL / 5. Lapin & Me / 6. Shops to visit: Restored

Whenever I’m in Amsterdam I try to squeeze in as much quality shops in the (often) limited time I have. Every time I try to cover one particular area, such as the Pijp or Noord or center. I usually know exactly what stores I want to see and in most cases there even is a time plan involved. You could say I’m a little bit neurotic that way. The funny thing is I usually don’t prepare at all whenever I go and visit a foreign city. Foreign cities and their unknown treasures, the enormous quantity of must-see shops: they have a way of paralyzing me. “There is no way to see everything so I might as well just go and see what pops up.” is usually my city trip or vacation attitude. Since I had plenty of time to get to know Amsterdam (I was born and raised in Amstelveen which is kind of its suburb) I have conquered the paralysis as far as this city is concerned. I know it inside out (like my back pocket as we Dutch folk say). Last Saturday I went to Restored on the Haarlemmerdijk, a shop I wanted to see for ages (I […]

Let the light shine through

Now that Christmas is over and done with I find myself secretly longing for spring. Although I understand it’s going to get colder this coming weekend (they even said ‘below zero’!) I tried to ignore that piece of information. I especially needed some sunlight because yesterday evening I saw the first five episodes of Game of Thrones season 2. ‘Winter is coming and the dark night is full of danger and terror‘, which was pretty much the gist of it. I enjoyed it, but found myself especially excited waking up to a sunny day in a somewhat more normal world. Terror and darkness can be somewhat tiresome. So here is to letting the light in and to the unexpected treasures you can then discover.   {I inherited this cup and do not know it’s origin. Since I was little I have always been fascinated by the japanese girl inside. If someone knows where it comes from I would be glad to hear!}

Some things I love #4

Christmas is upon us and I keep thinking about shiny golden accessories. We already had snow this year but it was a bit early, would be nice if we had a white Christmas though. I would like a bright blue sky with a bright sun and a snowy white world. It always reminds me of skiing (which I love). Just some things I love, next post will be more Christmassy I promise! {1. Designer spotlight: Hattie Newman {paperartist}

I hope you all had a fine weekend? I spent Saturday at this year’s edition of PapierHier in Amsterdam. It was the first time I attended this heaven for paper lovers. I had a great time getting to know all sorts of different paper and getting inspired by people who love paper just as much as I do. I felt like this whole world opened it’s doors to me. I just had no idea of the variety! The event was hosted by Antalis one of the leading paper company’s in Holland. One of the people who gave a lecture was Hattie Newman. This London based set designer and imagemaker works a lot with paper and can count such names as Louis Vuitton, Honda, GAP, The Times etc. among her clients. She seemed like such a sweet little thing! I just couldn’t believe she was the person behind all this beautiful work! I also made a card with a letterpress. I loved it and I would really like to do a workshop or course in letterpress techniques someday so if you have any suggestions? {1. Installation Grafik Magazine Free Range Birds / 2. Some things I love #3

November already and it’s getting really chilly and dark outside. I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to miss the sun… November gets me thinking about wooden cabins and a burning fire, warm sweaters and hot chocolate… Is it Christmas yet? {1. Eric Bompard kashmere sweater / 2. OhMarie!

Everyone present at the launch of the new digital magazine OhMarie! got a piñata with a gift. These gifts were meant as a little challenge; everyone should take a picture of them in their interior and then pass them through to the next blogger / person. Via Nina from Paper Stories I received five little lace bobbin utensils (kantklosjes). For a long time I just stared at them wondering what to do with them. Nina made such a beautiful pure photo of them and their first owner Monique also did a great job, with adding some nice images of the craft. I just saw ribbons every time I looked at them, I mean lace and ribbons right? And I wanted to hang them in my Christmas tree. But since I don’t have one yet I had to improvise. If you would like to be the next person to receive these five little friends please let me know and I will send them to you!

Woonbeurs 2012 #2

Some more pics from the Woonbeurs 2012. I just love these sort of events, I could keep on taking pictures! In two weeks you can find me at the Frankfurt Buchmesse for work, another kind of atmosphere, but with the same sort of inspirational vibe. I would love to travel to Milan and go to Interieur 2012 in Kortrijk or Maison & Objet in Paris too. Maybe next time… who knows? {1. & 2. Loved the 101woonideeën house!
