Fall Frenzy

What everyone experiences in January, shortly after New Year, the frenzy of turning a new leaf, I experience in September. For me this is THE time for new plans and new ideas and this last month has been booming with new things to the max. I started Trendacademy of course (love it!). And on top of that it’s just a busy time (not just in the book biz I’ve discovered) all around with fairs and meet-ups and exciting stuff. Tomorrow I’m attending this big lecture by trendwatchers David Shah and Christine Boland and coming weekend I’m going to the Strawberry Earth Fair. I’ve always had great respect for Mette te Velde who came up with the Strawberry Earth platform. I think she’s a green pioneer and I’m very much looking forward to the very first SEFair. It promises to bring the best in sustainable fashion, food, design and film. I can hardly wait!

Art eye: Lotta Blokker

The bronze sculptures Lotta Blokker creates are somewhat creepy because they are incredibly lifelike. I think bronze is a really extraordinary medium to work with because of its characteristics. Through time bronze changes color and some areas of the work become shiny or greenish. Bronze is solid hard on the outside, but essentially it’s a mould so the inside is empty. It made me think about the people who modeled for Lotta. Being immortalized in bronze, your (young) body preserved for ages to come. Wouldn’t it be extremely weird to visit it when you are old and to know it can potentially survive for ages? Bronze also reminds me of one of my first art crushes: Camille Claudel who had a relationship with the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin. Camille led an interesting life, she was drawn to the arts as much as Rodin but as a woman wasn’t taken as serious. Her work is beautifully wild and passionate. She said sculpting was the real deal (as opposed to painting) because it’s three dimensional and because of that it can harness more emotion. Where Camille’s work is a scream of passion, Lotta Blokker’s is demure and full of supressed emotion. Beautiful! […]

LoveStories Intimate

Being a woman is all about feeling comfortable in your skin. I struggled with insecurities as any woman I imagine up till my late twenties. But the last couple of years I feel more confident than ever. Beauty is about confidence and a certain nonchalance. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I don’t fit the standard beauty ideal and I don’t attempt to fit that mould any more. One thing I love is lingerie because it celebrates being a woman more than anything. LoveStories is a concept of Marloes Hoedeman, fashion and interior stylist. I love the delicate pieces and they are really affordable too. LoveStories has a shop in the Nine Streets area of Amsterdam but also sells online. Make sure to visit the shop when you’re in the neighborhood. You will love being a woman and being able to buy all this! (and your husband will probably thank you too). {Images via Ganbaroo PR}

Trendwatching

Meanwhile I’m very much looking forward to starting my degree in Trendwatching at Trendacademy. I have been interested in this field of study & business for a while now and thought it was high time to do something with it. I’m very curious to see where this path is going to lead me. {Ozan Mutlu Dursan photography}

Some things I love #8

It has been a while since my last STIL so high time to change that! We are enjoying some nice weather over here which is really great since I want to desperately forget fall is on its way… Still I do have some nice things coming up this fall and in January my boy is turning 4! He’s already dying to go to school so I intend to make the most of this couple of months I have left with him. In 2015 we are turning a new leaf, it’s a new phase. It has flown by so fast! {1. Eva Schreuder jewellery

Today is my five year wedding anniversary. How time flies! It struck me that most of my jewellery was a gift from my husband. He knows I really love jewellery and whenever there is a special occasion, like the birth of my son or my birthday he gives me something for my ‘collection’. This way every big emotional moment connects with a piece and tells its story which I really like. At ShowUp I met the lovely Eva Schreuder, she makes beautiful fine jewellery pieces that can fill any sort of silence in your own life poem. In her own words: “A poem consists of words and the silence in between”  (A free interpretation of a Dutch poem by Martinus Nijhoff ) This poem, written on a wall near my home, touches the core of my inspiration to make jewellery. I intent to make ‘half-way-there-products’. It is lost without the wearer. In my jewellery I want to capture the silence in between the words, but at the same time invite the wearer to do so. My jewelry should be a marriage between art and a utensil. The icing on the cake is the added sentimental value. Besides her own label Eva […]

ShowUp (again)

I felt really inspired after visiting ShowUp this weekend. After I saw all these creative people living their dream by ‘creating’ I thought more about my creative dreams and about finding a way to do something with them. The problem with me is that I like so many different things. I like photography and fashion, design and illustration to name just a few. And then there is this whole ‘spiritual’ side of me (which I rarely share here). How can I ever choose one thing? Sometimes I feel I’m doomed not being really good in anything (creative I mean). “The difference between them and you is that they just do it.” Nina said to me and she is right of course although she’s putting a little bit too much trust in my talent… Having the guts and just going for it! Not being over analytical and critical! Not being an absolute perfectionist! The art of letting go… and just doing it! {1. Flower by Vlinder&Vogel / 2. ShowUp 2014

I had the best weekend! On Saturday I was one of the models for one of Holly’s gorgeous bridalshoots *blush* with the amazing photographer Anouschka Rokebrand (more on that soon) and today I went to the ShowUp trade fair with Nina from Paper Stories. We saw a lot of beautiful stuff and on top of that it was just really nice to be inspired together with a friend. I will pick some brands to blog about in the coming weeks, but here are just some inspirational photo’s I made. I made them with my iPhone.. my little boy dropped (yes, I did say dropped) my Nikon camera this morning and now it’s kind off not zooming anymore.. In fact it’s not doing much anymore.. Any tips for a good camera are more than welcome! As far as highlights go: THE VENUE! The trade fair has grown so much! {1. Ferm Living via Kolk & Kolk Agenturen // 2. Magic

I’m a total Instagram-fan from the very beginning and all these new photo apps to me are just like heaven. You can make amazing collages without Photoshop (which is on my wish list for a long time). I think it’s great, although I don’t know how companies like Adobe feel about apps like Bazaart. To me however there can never be enough art and enough people that are able to make art (or beautiful things). All these apps for me signify a lot of happiness, an outlet for creativity. Pure magic!

Fashion Friday: Cotélac

High time to share something for Fashion Friday! When I was in France I discovered this beautiful shop with a brand called Cotélac. The fabrics were amazing, very high quality and the patterns were also stunning. It seemed like a typically French brand but with influences from Africa for instance. Sometimes they collaborate with a specific illustrator/artist like Marion Fayolle. And the best thing is they have an e-shop! These photos are from the lookbook summer//14. I just couldn’t bring myself to post photo’s from the new fall/winter collection since I want to desperately deny winter is coming…
